There is a strand in Chinese culture that sees itself as better than the Western world, yet at the same time rather slavishly emulates that world and seeks its approval. It is a very hollow sort of self-confidence. Anyhow, an interesting article. You could make the argument that the latter is not specific to DPRK and extends to all east asian countries in varying degrees.
